Coach Tom Farden accused of verbally and emotionally abusing athletes
Posted by Joseph on August 29, 2023 at 5:56 pmThis is not good news by any means, as if it’s true, I expect Tom Farden to leave as head coach of the gymnastics team. It’s being reported that his is being accused of verbally and emotionally abusing his athletes, even so far as to physically intimidate them. Some are saying that he even would play favorites and would ‘berate’ people.
The university hired someone to look into the allegations.

If it’s all true, I think he should be fired. But it would be better if he resigns on his own volition, and not forced to. That would go a long way in repairing his image. Especially if he apologizes as well.

I don’t know what to believe, but if this is all true, he either needs to resign or change his ways asap.
-
Maybe it’s time we moved on from Farden. He may be one of the best coaches around, it doesn’t give him the right to mistreat gymnasts.
-
I don’t know if it’s true. Some players have come forward in support of him and don’t believe the accusations.
-
Not enough is known at the moment, so people are taking sides too quickly. Waiting out the investigation is probably the best thing to do to come to a good observation on what’s going on here.

Honestly, I’ll wait to judge on this story when we get the full details from both sides. To me it just sounds like the dude gets mad fast, but I feel like every couch gets mad pretty fast.
If he did do all that he’s accused of, then he should be forced out. Lets see what the investigation brings before we judge on anything.

Same dude. They are investigating, so the best bit of info should come from the Utes themselves. Hopefully he is removed if he did do all of this, but I’m not sure he is as bad as they are saying he is.
-
Yeah I’m going to wait until the investigation is fully conducted. I don’t know what to believe. Maybe he did do this, if so, he should be suspended or if it’s that serious, fired.

Not a good look for us. I hope this is all figured out. I hope Farden hasn’t done what he is being accused of, but we’ll hear more soon I’m sure.
-
Are there any updates to this investigation? I’m sure we’ll hear more soon, but I’d like some kind of update.
-
I haven’t heard any news on it since it was first reported, but I’m sure they’re thoroughly looking into it.
-
-
They haven’t fired him yet, which is a good sign for him, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be fired. I’m sure the investigation will conclude soon.
-
I don’t think they’re going to find enough concrete evidence to fire him. I think any testimony from current and past students who worked under him is what will either save him or get him in trouble. We shall see.
-
Me neither. I think it’s going to be chalked up to him being just overly serious about his job, and he’s going to have to tone it down going forward.

Gymnasts describe Utah coach Tom Farden as ‘intense.’ Did his methods cross a line of abuse?
The university’s policy regarding athlete wellness addresses appropriate coaching methods and behavior. But some experts say it still leaves room for interpretation.
